As I write, Uncle Ricky's Real Radio Repository (www.reelradio.com) is airing the actual KFRC Top 100 countdown of 1968, currently with Dave Diamond in the chair. A great year for musical diversity from Cream to Mary Hopkin ! This 'live" stream runs until midnight, New Years Day, US Pacific Time. A healthy, satisfying 2007 to all in the US. We all know the HUGE impact Dr. Don Rose had on San Francisco radio, via his tenure at KFRC. There's an excellent example of his pre-KFRC formative years on Uncle Ricky's REELRADIO site at www.reelradio.com
It was "Don Rose" then, on WQXI Atlanta on February 28, 1967. For only $12(US) per year, subscribers to the REELRADIO Top 40 Repository site have access to hundreds of great Top 40 airchecks (largely American) and this one is EXCEPTIONAL ! Duration is around 51 minutes. Music restoration guru Rob Frankel has done a superb job, equally matched with exhibit comments from radio legends Paul Drew & Sam Hale. Whilst KFRC as such is no longer a radio station, guys like Dr. Don Rose were such an important part of its heyday in the 80's, I feel it's fitting to remember from 1967, a then "developing" personality of the San Francisco AM & FM family tree ! Well, well. I started this thread in September 2005 and as I write from South Australia tonight, I'm listening to the new "Classics Hits KFRC", now on 106.9FM.
Great to hear the call sign back on-air. Let's hope the station in this incarnation makes a profitable impression all round ! It's also about time San Francisco (and the world) once again heard "The Slim One" on KFRC, she'd be great in this environment. I'm sure she'd make the move from Salt Lake City. Ian, I'm listening too--there was a note in this morning's paper about it, and coincidentally I had one of my car's presets on that station for baseball. Seems like 70s tunes mostly--Bob Seger, twice--but I was happy to hear "Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Kiss 'm G'Bye" (I think there are some parentheses in there somewhere). No personalities yet. What I want is the old format, airchecks, noisy djs, all that idiocy. Recreate the whole sound and then it becomes much more reasonable background music.

James, as I alluded to in my post. It will be interesting to see the callibre of personalities KFRC employs.
Whilst the radio landscape has changed dramatically (largely for the worse) since the glory days of KFRC, there are still some extremely talented people out there looking for a creative radio outlet. Whether KFRC is prepared (allowed) to justly reward such talent with enormous pulling power (read "listeners" & "revenue") remains to be seen. Whilst the music & sport content will be a major factor in the resurrection of KFRC, the real difference from other music competitors and music devices will be the ham in the sandwich....the engaging personalities who provide the glue and character of the station. I really hope KFRC is given a fighting chance to survive and thrive, with great, local personalities and minimal (if any) voice tracking. Ironically, from an historical perspective. This weekend sees the 'new' KFRC "ON-AIR" for just over a week, the Golden Gate Bridge celebrating its 70th anniversary on Sunday & the original, iconic KFRC call letters heading towards their 83rd anniversary on September 24th ! For history sake, I may as well add, Dave Sholin kicks off 'LIVE' this morning on KFRC.
It will be really interesting to see 'how' the Classic Hits and Baseball (CHB) combo works for the station. With the Internet gaining considerable radio momentum across the planet and with KFRC's music still streaming whilst baseball is on the FM'er, they also have the opportunity to be creative on line, with both the music format, personalities and advertisers. Here comes my regular 'Slim' plug...If there are no other full time terrestrial gigs currently available, how about employing her to float between the Internet feed and FM fill duties ? Makes sense to me. Anybody agree or disagree ? Regards, IAN in Oz. |

Rest In Peace KFRC, your time has come.
Let's just remember the great and good times when radio was King, because people with originality, creativity AND a budget were allowed to take on the competition head on. How the world and the world of radio has changed so much, since the heyday of the BIG 610 KFRC. Regards, IAN in Oz. |
